Passenger Trains > 301 on Empire BuilderDate: 03/30/26 19:48 301 on Empire Builder Author: NPRocky Excitement in the Cascade Mountains tonight. Eastbound 8 is being pulled all alone by Charger 301 over the Stevens Pass 2.2% grade. We're all hoping for the best!

It had been failing left and right in the east.

It has ran out there for quite a few months and had very few major failures. Hopefully she has a long life ahead.
On a slightly different note, has anyone else been noticing the ALC-42s in general have been much more reliable? This has been highlighted by the recent P42 failures on the California Zephyr. Date: 03/31/26 10:27 Re: 301 on Empire Builder Author: NPRocky I was just wondering what's going on with ALC42 300. It was in a bad grade crossing collision some time back, I believe on the Coast Starlight. Could Amtrak have quietly retired it?

It was sent to a facility in Delaware where it is supposedly being repaired. Date: 03/31/26 13:38 Re: 301 on Empire Builder Author: NPRocky Thanks for the info on the 300. I think 300 was built just before Siemens came up with that easily-replaceable nose design. If so, that would obviously complicate the repair of the 300. At the rate trucks and cars are running in front of Amtrak trains lately, I hope there are plenty of those easily-replaceable noses on hand.

Reportedly at Amtrak in Delaware for nose replacement.
