Amtrak 50, P42DC 50th Anniversary unit, on California Zephyr, train 5, on Union Pacific's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision entered tunnel 1 in Coal Creek Canyon west of Arvada, CO, Thursday, 2 April 2026.

Car behind the Amtrak locomotives was DOTX 221 Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Office of Safety.

That FRA car is typically unmanned. It has built in sensors and just monitors the tracks and train handling. 

My Uncle Steve was on there. He got on at Creston, IA the night before. Said it was a great ride thru the Rockies.

Much appreciated by this old Amtrak veteran. Worked the 6/5 many times
during the "Triple Train" era; when the Zephyr, Desert Wind and Pioneer ran together. 
For those who don't really remember that time- it was a kind of a wonderful thing. (-:

Got to ride that combo between Provo and Salt Lake on my way to California and it was such a huge train, miss the good old days.
