Hiawatha with Double P42s
Author: sethamtrak

Hiawatha 331 in Glenview this morning with 135 west and 61 east due to the ongoing Midwest charger shortage. The train was a late departure from Chicago due to a late flip on train 330 from Milwaukee (earlier mechanical issues). I caught 61 working train 380 on Saturday. 61 is a Texas Eagle motor.

Interesting IF the states found another operator, they would not be able to pick up Amtrak equipment when the state owned stuff has breakdowns. I suppose they could lease freight or even Amtrak if Amtrak agrees.

What happened to cab or cabbage cars?  Two units is so wasteful regardless of which type.

There's a picture of efficiency at its best. UGH!

- Do these passenger equipment problems get reported to Wisconsin DOT?

- What's the "cure" process?

- Where are the cab cars and why were they not ordered for the rest of the DOT owned train sets? I guess the plan was written in stone at the time of the order to not turn the equipment and operate a Charger on both ends of the a train.

- Does Amtrak bill AND get paid for substituting non-state owned equipment in? Is Amtrak maximizing its power of the purse option here? Perhaps if it was more "aggressive" we'd see better resolutions - including an agreement that may strike the use of the Venture/Charger equipment from long-term use?

- Who is responsible for repairing state DOT owned rail equipment and what's the average "cure" period?
