Passenger Trains > In Honor of Amtrak's 55th AnniversaryDate: 05/01/26 14:59 In Honor of Amtrak's 55th Anniversary Author: Guitartrain In honor of Amtrak's 55th Anniversary (May 1, 1971 to May 1, 2026), here's three pics from 50 years ago
1. Amtrak train 91, the S/B Silver Star, is making its station stop. The "Star" is a daily train that runs from Boston, MA to Miami, FL. Its easy to understand why Amtrak's SDP40Fs were referred to as "bloody nose" units.5:30PM on 8-29-76 in Alexandria, VA. 2. Amtrak P30CH-700 has brought Amtrak train #20, the Southern Crescent, north from Washington's Union Station on Chessie System rails and is backing the train onto Amtrak's Northeast Corridor from the Chessie connection. A wreck / derailment in Amtrak's B&P tunnel in Baltimore has prevented E60CP-954 from its normal route from DC. Once 700 uncouples, 954 will be pan up and on its way north. 12:18PM on 9-19-76 in East Baltimore, MD. 3. Amtrak E60CP-954 is on its way north with train #20, the Southern Crescent. It and its train have just been hauled up from Washington's Union Station, on Chessie System's Washington Sub, to Chessie System's Bay View yard connection to the Northeast Corridor. AMTK P30CH-700 had the honor. All due to a wreck / derailment in Amtrak's B&P tunnel in Baltimore. What is now CSX's Sparrows Point Industrial Track is overhead. 12:22PM on 9-19-76 in East Baltimore, MD.
