Spirit Airlines quits
Author: GenePoon

Ultra low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is ending all flight operations after failing to secure a $500 million rescue package which would have left it in the ownership of the Federal government.   So, no "Amtrak of the skies."

Announcement

It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.

To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.

This website contains information about the wind-down process. If you have any further questions, please contact our claims agent, Epiq, by emailing SpiritAirlinesInfo@epiqglobal.com or calling (855) 952-6606 (for toll-free U.S. and Canada calls) or (971) 715-2831 (for international calls).

Feds were going to get 90% stake, trump wanted employees to have work, was hoping for more negotiations, but looks unlikely now.

Amazed Spirit Airlines was in business for 34 years.  Heard it provided air service for those looking for a low cost alternative.  Tough on those out of work 17,000 employees.

Spirit started that long ago as a trucking and logistics company and got involved in air freight
That went on to charter passenger Air Transport and then to scheduled.  The
company has had four or five different names through all that.

By the way, there's an effort to bring Spirit back through crowdsourcing (dubbed "Spirit 2.0"), of all things....

Who knows, they might get it to work, though it seems reminiscent of Richard Branson trying to buy the Concorde from Brithsh Airways...

P.S. Anyone up for "Amtrak 2.0"?
