Passenger Trains > Sidings on UP Santa Barbara Sub

It seems as if 777 routinely gets delayed waiting at Ellwood for 11 and 794, and 786 gets delayed at Tangair for 765 and 14. Other than cost, does anyone know why Capitan, which is between Ellwood and Gaviota wasn't made a controlled-siding when CTC was installed south of San Luis Obispo? Also, is Honda out of service? Seems like 786 could meet 765 at Tangair than make its Surf stop then go down to Honda to meet 14, but I think they always just sit at Tangair for both, losing 30+/- minutes in the process.

Capitan has well cars stuffed in the siding they have been there a long time

Capitan was skipped when CTC was installed, for some unfathomable reason. Honda had CTC installed, but UP always keeps it out of service, and only uses it to store cars. Surf and Grover were also skipped in the CTC installment, and Guadalupe only has CTC on the East Switch (South switch for those of you more accustomed to UPspeak). Of those sidings that were upgraded and actually placed into service, a number of them are currently blocked with cars.

Are the Siding at Conception and Sudden under CTC?

Yes, both of them, but Concepcion is always blocked with cars.

The Coast is a terrible place to store equipment for any length of time considering the corrosion and how quickly it sets in next to the ocean.

The CTC project from Ellwood to SLO was an agreement and paid for by the state and UP..  The agreement was to have only a little more tha half of the sidings with power switches/CTC.  It was a moey thing only, afaik.   Why they picked the sidings they did, who knows.  

If the state helped pay for this greater fluidity, I can't believe someone hasn't yelled at UP for blocking the sidings with cars.  UP = unbelieveably pathetic.
