Passenger Trains > Northern Sky w/ Chicago BackdropDate: 07/06/26 08:06 Northern Sky w/ Chicago Backdrop Author: sethamtrak Looking like a model railroad a bit. Northern Sky had just arrived into Chicago and is awaiting a trip around the wye to be properly pointed for a departure to LA on today's 3(6). Engine 504 was chugging away a few tracks over. The sights and sounds of the 500's will truly be missed (if they actually ever retire them). I'll include a photo of the car on train 342 in Glenview before I hightailed it to downtown. By the time I got to Roosevelt the train was already unloaded, moved to the yard and the Northern Sky was uncoupled. Very quick move.

Frustrating as all get out to see that the S&I Building only covers 2 tracks...after all these years. I know capital is scarce, but how they could not have covered additional tracks in lo these many years is not able to be understood. If memory serves, tracks 3 and 4 are covered with the balance of the coach yard service tracks 1-2, 5-14 without any protection. SMH.
I know Amtrak won't look out for itself, but you would hope that the state partners would have enough sense to demand that their equipment be better protected and serviced. But ATK execs hated the fact that private cars were the only profitable part of their so-called business. The trouble was that it caused a little bit of extra effort -- bad idea for a government agency with no incentive to achieve beyond the minimum.
