The Mongolian Railroad Museum
Author: VintageMac

Last week I was wandering around Ulaanbaatar and happened upon the “Mongolia Railroad Museum” near the train station.

There are a seven locomotives placed at an angle along one of the streets.  Unfortunately they are behind a fence and raised above the level of the sidewalk, so it is difficult to get clear photos.  Each locomotive had an information plaque, but the writing was in Russian Cyrillic.

1. My first photo is a grab-shot of an empty coal train cutting through the city at rush hour.  Big Sky scheme?

Fantastic photos!  Thanks for the heads-up on another railroad display that I was totally unaware of.

Your photos are probably the most unique ever posted on TO.
Thanks very much for posting.

Looks like a great place! Those Soviet P36 4-8-4s are my all time favorite steamers. The paint job they have on the one here is not at all historic though. If you have any photos of the plaques I would be more than happy to translate them into English for you.

Yes, it looks like a standard 60 cm (1' 11-1/2") gauge industrial loco, of which hudreds, maybe even thousands, were built in the USSR and China, although I seem to remember that the original design is Polish. Some may still be in service in China, and you can find them in many Youtube clips.

Great Views!
Go to the Peace Bridge bus stop, the east of the Ulaanbaatar railway station in Google Map Street View.

Thank you for the great pictures.  P36 is one of my favotites and traditionally came in various shades of green and blue.  The colors on P36 71 are my favorite, taken in the early 90's north of Moscow.
