SD70ACe-BB Demonstrators (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, I opened this thread to show some pics of the SD70BB demonstrators. Some pics are old, some new. Nowadays the Demonstrators are in Progress Rail shops in Hortolandia SP receiving some cab modifications to test on Vale EFVM system after a period of time testing on Rumo railroad in the South.

1 - Units 8796 and 8795 at EMD plant in Sete Lagoas, MG;

2 - Unit 8796 seen from the cab of 8795;

3 - The reflective EMD logo showing GT46 at side at EMD plant.

Great post Pedro - thanks!

In the third photo, what is the large screen on the left used for?

That is the OBC system. It works like PTC, giving all information about the route, speed, trains ahead, track profile, etc

Does each axle have a traction.motor?

Yes, like our GE's with 8 axles, these EMD also use 8 traction motors.

Id love to see a standarg gauge BB in the USA. Would have to ride better than a 6 axle.

I also think the same. GE could take one for testing there, specislly on the big hills like Donner Pass. They have much more adhesion and it is proven that have no issues in the spam bolster arrangment.

There was a SD something that had a 3 axle SD truck up front and a BB span on the rear as a test back along time ago.

You're thinking of SDP45 BN 6599, discussed in this thread:
http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3634804
A poster in that thread is correct in saying that the two axle sub-trucks were made from SD Flexicoil trucks that had the third axle cut off. Some more detail is in this thread:
http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,1360078,1360817#msg-1360817

That was the first truck test program I lead having joined the EMD Truck Design Group a few years earlier. That truck layout was the initial starting point for the design of the SD70ACe-BB truck but the shortcomings of that design caused me to head in another direction.

Hi Dave, thanks for all explanation of the old BN unit with BB trucks. I can perceive it was the first real BB truck developed by EMD. Interesting they didn't test it with the special order of eight axles units to Vale mining in the 1980's. At that time, Vale received the second order of the DDM45's that could be BBM45 if EMD had foreseen the viability of BB wheel arragment to narrow gauge railroads.
