Hi all,

On 2nd December, Southern Shorthaul Railroad conducted a wagon transfer movement of 90 empty coal hoppers from Port Augusta in South Australia to New South Wales. This was the second of two movements as the first I was unable to get due to work. The hoppers were originally owned by Pacific National and were sold to SSR. They were previously used on the Leigh Creek coal train which ceased running back in April after the power station it served closed.
The second movement was hauled by five Clyde Engineering/EMD built bulldogs. Up front was Streamliners 2016 liveried B61 followed by SSR liveried S317, GM27, GM10 and former El Zorro liveried S302. The Railroad Australia TV series film crew followed the movement.
Not long after departing issues arose with S317 and GM27 which saw the train sidelined for over four hours while repairs were made. S302 was pretty much going for a ride and was not powering after the train got going agaiin.
B61 and GM10 were built in 1952 and were originally fitted with 1500hp 16-567B engines. B61 has six traction motors while GM10 only has four axles powered like an E unit. The other three units were all built with 1800hp 16-567C engines. Now B61 has a 16-567C, GM10 a 16-567BC, S317 and GM27 have 16-645E engines with only S302 having the original motor.

1. The transfer movement, train 4578S arives on the siding at Winninowie.

2. Pacific National service 5MP2 with NR116, NR70 crosses 4578S at Winninowie.

3. On the move again with the high summer sun now making its way to the west side of the train, 4578S approaches Mambray Creek.

1. Aurizon service 5MP1 passes through Port Germein hauled by 6026, 6028.

2. On the double track section between Crystal Brook and Coonamia, SCT service 5MP9 heads for Perth at Warnertown hauled by SCT002, SCT009.

3. Climbing the one percent grade, 4578S heads along the double track int the same spot as the previous shot but looking north.

1. Pacific National steel train, 5NY3 from Newcastle in New South Wales to Whyalla, South Australia passes through Gladstone hauled by NR12 and NR15.

2. 5NY3 crossing 4578S  at Gladstone.

3. The last shot of the day for me. 4578S climbs upgrade between Gladstone and Caltowie. The train still had over an hour of daylight running left but I needed to get home.

Great pictures and videos.  Those engines look sharp EXCEPT for the horns in front of the cabs.  The last engine looks a bit like a version of SP's bloody nose.

I like that double nose locomotive. I am surprised that concept never caught on here to any degree. What is lineage of those diesels. Also are Austrian RR on US standard gauge? I have kind of lost "track" of what is going there!

NSW is  standard gauge,and there is standard gauge connecting all states(except Tassie),but the states still hang onto their old gauges.Victoria still has 5ft-3in.Qld,SouthAust,West Aust,and Tassie hang onto 3ft-6in.The iron ore Railroads up in the north west are standard gauge,and isolated from the rest of the network.
