I had thought the days of transporting cattle by train were long gone, but not so. I caught this modern looking train in Emerald, Queensland in late July. each cattle wagon is in fact an open container, the ones in the photo are marked "Top Lift Only". Road trains, 150 foot behemoths, are not permitted to operate east of Emerald, so I assume it makes economic sense for the cattle to continue their journey by rail.

The third photo shows Emerald station with the date 1900 above the entrance.

Very interesting operation. It looks like they took some inspiration from the container world.
