VLI wood train C176 caught fire (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, two VLI wood trains caught fire in the last 48 hours. The hot and dry weather could be the reason. Too many fires near the tracks these days.

Bob, VLI said it was caused by vandals, but I am not dure about it. The location in the video is just 15 km from my town. I saw this train passing here in town and noboby saw fire starting on it. The train didn' stopped from here to that yard, so it is difficult to believe that somebody could set fire in 10 cars in movement.
No injouries to the crew or other people near the tracks.

I'm suprised the crew didn't uncouple 2-3 cars ahead to save the rest of the train . . .  instead of moving slowly and fanning the flames.  Do freights in Brazil require a caboose and tail end crewman?

Hi, in the video we see the train moving slowly becase it was arriving in the siding ahead. The train had 90 cars and the fire was in the last cars. At the time of the video, the engineer didn't know about the fire.
No, the railroads here do not use cabooses anymore. The last one to use them was EFA, a standard gauge rwy in the North.
