FCAB Chile new livery
Author: utwazoo

FCAB has a new image. Looks nice and hopefully they'll be able to keep the units clean in a tough desert environment. They bought the four SW1200Ms and three NF210s from the closed SQM railway. 1446 in the photo from April is one of the Newfies.

Nice looking paint scheme. What is the track gauge and what are the sliding shutters on the side windows for? Keep out the glare of the sun or do they have a problem with rock throwers?

Meter gauge. Shutters to keep out heat/sun....not rocks

Interesting six-axle switcher. Also, since when has Chile had Newfoundland engines? This is the first I've heard of it.

FCAB commenced purchasing in 1988, now own a total of 21, all still in use on metre gauge. Numbered 1413-1430, and 1445-1447. The latter 3 were purchased from SQM (Chile) in 2016, converted from Cape to metre, in use from Q1 2017

The initial NF210, around 300 42' flatcars, and 5000 tonnes of rail was purchased at scrap pricing.

Seven were purchased from Nicaragua in 1994, for around $80k each

Ignore the Wikipedia NF210 entry, it is full of errors and misleading

FCAB rebuilt the SQM units prior to them entering service in Chile. FCAB and SQM's offices are next to each other in Antofagasta, the two had a close working relationship, there was a swap of NF210 between them in c.1995. Until around 2006 SQM locos were trucked to FCAB for heavy repair/rebuild

The only other 2 NF210 exported went to Nigeria, withdrawn around 2006

Any idea what 1445 to 1447's original CN numbers were? Thanks.
