Panama Canal Ry. Co last month
Author: railstiesballast

The Lexington Group in Transportation History met in Panama last month.
Our trips included the Panama Canal Co. passenger train 10/27 and a partial transit of the canal on 10/28.
Here are two grab shots of trains from our tour boat, I missed the approach of both trains because the ships are so interesting.
The first is a work train with the 1859, he is positioning a flat car with a man lift on the Chagras River through truss bridge, maybe for painting. The second image is a northbound (Pacific to Caribbean) stack train passing ships near Gamboa.
They use almost exclusively reconditioned US equipment, all their freight cars are 40-foot 5-pack double stacks, locomotives are EMD F40s and SD-40s, and the passenger equipment is lightweight US coaches plus an SP dome.
Two to three container trains of 55 platforms (up to 110 boxes) are run, their business is taking small batches of boxes across so that ships don't have to transit the canal (for example a Los Angeles to Valparaiso, Chile ship can drop of a few boxes at Panama that are going to the Caribbean and continue south, saving the canal fees and time).
Pictures of the passenger equipment is in my post on the Passenger board.

Nice location to visit. Is there a museum where one can see the old railroad stuff used in the Panama rwy?
