International Railroad Discussion > Pictures of Peru RailDate: 11/07/17 09:55 Pictures of Peru Rail Author: SP8595 On Saturday, November 4th I rode on Peru Rail trains from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu and then from Machu Picchu back to Poroy. It was a very enjoyable trip and on the climb out of Machu Picchu, we rode in the first car behind the #510 and got to hear the engine working hard up the grade. I wish that one of the Alco engines had been pulling our train however:}
After getting off of the train at the Machu Picchu station we then rode a tour bus on a crazy, twisting one lane road where we almost had a couple of near head-on collisions with other tour buses up to the ruins! I was then surprised that once on the tour of the ruins that you could view the train tracks down below at the Hidroelectrica station and watch the trains switching:} Pictures were taken with my phone. 1) Peru Railway #356 (Alco DL535b) is ready to head to Machu Picchu from the station at Ollantaytambo. 2) EMD GR12 #510 heads through town after cutting off from the train. It will turn around (not sure where or on a wye or turntable?) and then lead the train that I was riding back to Poroy. 3) New Genset #530 heads into the station at Ollantaytambo. More of these engines are to be delivered and will probably be the end of the Alco's that are running on this line:{ Date: 11/07/17 10:52 Re: Pictures of Peru Rail Author: pedrop Great pics. I imagine that it is a wonderfull trip. Good hint for my planning trips in 2018.

Don't forget that Perurail is 50% owned by Belmond, the London based resort and luxury train operator, for whom how things look is extremely important.
