My wife and I have signed up for a 15 day escorted tour of Israel next May 2019. I am not sure at this point whether I will have much free time to explore any rail activity (maybe one 4 hour free time) and at this point I think my free time is in Jerusalem.

Can I get a tad bit of background of the Israeli rail system and what would be the top point of interest? How friendly is the Israeli rail system to railfans? I have spent some time research with Wikipedia as a starting point and spent some time on the Israeli Railway website.

Passenger trains are easily photographed on the mainline that runs in the median of a major freeway in Tel Aviv.
