More SD70BB to VLI (Brazil)

EMD Brazil released the first two of an order of twenty nine SD70ACe-BB´s to VLI. I found unit 8429 leading cement train Y601 today here in town.

Should the grade x-ing sign be read "VIA FERREA CRUZAMENTO" or "CRUZAMENTO VIA FERREA" or "VIA CRUZAMENTO FERREA?"

Hi, "CRUZAMENTO VIA FERREA" is the right option.

They sure contour the cab and bodies for the local countryside . The K-M units were contoured for the tunnels in Austria and the German Alps...

These are also contoured to fit the tunnels in Brazil, otherwise no reason to do it. The attempt is to fit all the potential meter gauge lines.

Great shots Pedro! How many SD70BB's will be in service when the full order is delivered?

Dave, VLI will have 86 SD70BB until the end of 2018. Maybe other orders can be done in the near future.

They have B.B. trucks to increase the number of traction motors for meter gauge as the narrower motors have less power and also to spread out the weight. This allows a heavier loco with higher tractive effort than six axle units.

As for the cabs and radiators, those are to allow for the tighter clearances on many of the VLi lines.

Awesome! They’ve really done a number on those cabs to make them clear the tunnels.

Has EFVM gotten theirs yet?

EFVM is using the two EMD Demonstrators since last year. The tests will end in 2019.As I could know with friends there, Vale mining is satisfied with them and can order some after the end of the tests.

Yes, two of them do the job of three dash 9' in the ore trains or six BB40-2s in the VLI grain trains.

That is some train being pulled by 2 engines. How many cars and what was the weight of the train?

EFVM ore trains can be 168 or 252 ore cars. The 252 weights about 27,000 metric tons. The test with the SD70BB show that they are much slower than the Dash 9's and drinks more diesel, specially in the 252 ore cars. It is said that a test with 336 ore cars will be done, but not when. EFC (broad gauge) 336 ore cars weights 47,000 metric tons. EFVM sometimes run 320 ore cars with three Dash 9's.

Is the 8 axle SD70BB the same length as the US SD70Ace 6 axle unit
with the length of fuel tank adjusted to accommodate 2 extra axles?
Or is it proportionately longer, keeping everything else above and
below the walkway same size in both applications?
Those are handsome looking units, I like the teardrop front windows.
