The Giant Electrics of Ofotbanen
Author: YukonYeti

Well above the Arctic Cirle lies a railway unlike no other in the world. Stretching from Kiruna, Sweden to Narvik, Norway as many as 24 to 26 trains a day run iron ore to the coast to be shipped world-wide. While I have shot most of the line, one segment known as the Ofotbanen has been off limits to me and my camera. Fortunately, a few souls have ventured into this 27 long mile segment to capture what are known as IOREs against a most scenic background. My good friend and talented photographer Odd Arne Loeshagen has allowed me to share his imagery...

Perhaps my fifth trip to the line will be a charm but for now, I will sit back and appreciate Odd Arne's work.

As they say in my country "tusen takk og ha det bra.

They are all very impressive but number five is breath taking.

I understand the town of Kiruna must move because of the mining activity and the potential for ground collapse from under the buildings. Is there any progress on relocating the town ?

Really enjoyed Kiruna when I was there for a few days in 2011...

Great scenery with the glacially polished rock outcrops. (For us North Americans, you can see similar scenery on the Canadian iron ore lines in Labrador and northern Quebec).

Is this line generally inaccessible for photography, or have you just not gotten lucky on previous visits?

And also, do I understand correctly that there's passenger service on this route? I know somebody strongly recommended a ride to Narvik when I was in Finland many years ago, and I didn't have the time to do it.
