Chilean steam 1977
Author: jbwest

In February 1977 I made my only visit to chase steam in Chile. We took the Trans Andino from Argentina to Santiago, and the overnight sleeper from there to Temuco. Temuco was the center of remaining steam activity if I remember correctly. We had hoped to see the large 4-8-2's on the mainline, but they were stored serviceable (and still being overhauled). But there were a lot of smaller engines still working including some Alco and Montreal 2-8-2's and the little 2-6-0's that seemed to power every local out of Temuco. The first image is two of the 2-8-2's on a freight, the second a mixed leaving Temuco with one of the 2-6-0's, and finally the interesting shop switcher at the roundhouse.

Very cool. I especially like the 3rd shot, the shop switcher. Not as wild as some! but they've made it their own...

When steam finished in Brazil many locomotives were sold to other countries in South America. Maybe some were sent to Chile too.

Shop switchers definitely tend to be one of a kind. Your comment reminded me of this one at Tubarao, not colorful but definitely unusual. When I first saw it I assumed it was stationary, but then it MOVED.
