The "B" truck of a BB40-9W (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, a close-up on the "B" truck of Vale BB40-9W 1309. I really like this kind of truck. Some model railroaders use to model it using Frateschi U20C truck shell.

What are the devices attached to the long lengths of chain? Appear to be piped for air.

Yes, it is the pipe that brings air from the main reservoir to the cabin throtle.

"What are the devices attached to the long lengths of chain?"

I would guess that those are the air brake cylinders. I would further guess that the chains run to a hand-brake mechanism somewhere on the locomotive. Look at how the chains are attached to the lever running to the brakeshoe arms. Interesting arrangement.
