What a huge porch ! (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today afternoon I took some pics of the EMD BB40´s that were leading train C700 here in town. While the yard man Roberto was switching some cars to add in the train, I took some pics of him on the huge porch or VLI BB40T-2 4826.

Do they use hand signals to switch? Or is it done with radios?

Add a roof to the porch to make a BB veranda.

Is it because they needed the extra room for extra axles to reduce the weight/axle?

Pedro, quick question.

Looking at the 4826 it still has the dynamic brake grill and bulge on the side of the hood but they have removed the fans. Are these units dynamic brake equipped still and if so where are the grids and fans?

It is a very interesting conversion the way they have basically sheared the roof off making it flat for clearances.

Keep up the great reporting.

Pedro,

Do you know what the axle load on these units is? There must be a large amount of ballast in the extension of the underframe in the front so that the axle loads are equalized. Just looking at it, it seems terribly out of balance to the rear.

They moved the dynamic brakes beneath the radiators

Are these beasts standard gauge or a narrower gauge?

I think this picture can explain it better. The Dinamic brake fans of the old SD40-2's and Sd40T-2's were moved to inside the carbody and below to the main radiator fans.

Dave, the engineer responsable to the conversion process produced an article where he says:

"The change of trucks and the increase of the size of the locomotive cause that its weight is increased.
To maintain the original weight of the locomotive, the part of the ballast installed during the manufacture of the locomotive
is withdrawned. The ballast must be removed taking into account that the counter-shaft of the platform must be maintained"
