21st century problem in a BCE setting

An Athens Metro green line train, covered in graffiti, exits Monastiraki station in the shadow of the 2400+ year old Parthenon last Thursday. Nearly all the green line cars I saw resembled the New York subway circa 1979 in terms of exterior vandalism. On the other hand, blue line cars, which serve the airport, were completely free of graffiti.
