ABPF steam site in São Lourenço, MG (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, last weekend I did a trit to São Paulo state and passed through São Lourenço, MG a beautifull balneary where the ABPF ( Brazilian Association of Railway Preservation) has a steam site. I had no time to run the train, but I took some pics of the site. Here they are.

1) Steel cars waiting restoration;

2) A German made 0-4-0 in display at the station.

3 and 4) EFCB 2-8-2 1424 is the only steam locomotive in operation in the site for while. It will be changed by another one soon, since 1424 will be sent to Cruzeiro shops for heavy maintenance.

5) The plate of 1424

Is 1424 a 2-8-0 or a  2-8-2?

It is a Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Comp, Germany, built in 1892, 80cm gauge.

Pedro,

Thanks for the postings on Brazilian Railroads. On my tour in 2002 we visited Sao Lourenco and rode the train. I remember we crossed a mountain range with a out of service meter gauge line, was this connected to this line?

I imagine you crossed the range of Mantiqueira coming from Sao Paulo state to Minas Gerais, so that is the same track. ABPF also run a steam train in Passa Quatro, in the border of the two states. It is restoring a diesel engine to start a plan to link Cruzeiro, SP to Passa Quatro, MG through the 1km long tunnel in the Mantiqueira range.
