How to change the side of narrow gauge inside a broad gauge track
Author: pedrop

Hi, I live in a area with dual gauge tracks. Sometimes it is necessary to change the side of the narrow gauge inside the broad gauge track in function of something that can be an obstruction to circulation of the trains. A special device is used in this application called "Pombinho" in the railroad engineering words. Here in my town, due to the circulation of the log trains with flat cars wider than normal, it was necessary to install a "Pombinho" to prevent these kind of cars hit a wall in a curve in the yard. The job is doing this week and is almost finished. In general, the "Pombinho" has two sides; one to allow the train change the side and than go back to the normal side after to pass the obstruction. The pics show the "Pombinho" in construction here in EVP yard.

Interesting. Distant cousin of gantlet track.

A view in the opposite direction.
Pics taken with cell phone, so not good quality.

Not even close to ganlet track.

It would more likely be a cousin to a   pointless switch.

Is this near a Wye or a Reversing Loop?
These' transition' rails are necessary when a train or engine is reversed and the narrow gauge aligned the entry route.

The ballast train arrived today afternoon, so tomorrow they will add balast to these tracks. I will try to register and watch the first train passing through the device.

Pedro, is there a speed restriction with this device? Thanks for the photos. Love the dual gauge stuff

Yes, speed restriction of 20 km/h while crossing the 200 meters long device.

Now that would be cool to model, thanks for the pics.

Modelers should e careful to monitor their truck's back-to-back wheel measuremnt to pass sucessflly through the frogs.

Wouldn't be any different than the gauge in a regular switch.
