SD80ACe to MRS railroad (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

MRS will start the road test with EMD demonstrator 8080, an SD80ACe originally built as SD70ACe/45 and upgraded to SD80ACe. The test will start next week, 9/20. Picture from a friend.

Rumors say that MRS ordered 15 SD80ACe with 5300HP to EMD of Brazil.

Great info Pedro. Do you know if the new MRS units will have radial steering trucks? That's one of the last things I was working on before I retired.

Hi Dave,

I really do not know about the trucks of the new SD80ACe's. I will try to discover when they start the tests.

Actually, from the close up it looks like they are the HTCR trucks, same as the Vale units.

The broad gauge units in Brazil so far have gotten the cast frame HTSC non-radial bogies which is what you see in the pictures. EMD did not have a radial steering broad gauge bogie in its portfolio as of a couple of years ago but I was working on it with others then. I don't know if it's yet available, in production or prototype form, hence my question.

Hi, Dave

How can I identify the difference among the two types?

I would expect the a new radial bogie to be fabricated so would look like the HTCR6 bogies on the EMD Tier 4 locos. If cast, it would look like the SD70ACe HTCR4 bogies such as on all the Union Pacific SD70ACe's. The easy spotting feature for either would be the horizontal yaw dampers between the axles that aren't present on a non-radial bogie.

Hi, I received some pics from Eduardo Souza, that work as Fleet Manager at EMD of Brazil.
Note the huge air intake pipes. I am wondering if somebody can pass in the walkway with such big duct on the way. I also imagine that it produces a big suction force in that point in the walkway. It can suck somebody😂
