VLI runaway and collision (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today we had a runaway of empty gondolas at EPM yard, near my town. The customer received the gondolas and left some in its privated yard. As we perceived, they forget o add a chock to prevent the runaway. The cars run about three Km and hit a couple of Vale dash 9 that are arriving at EPM yard. One girl was hurt near the crossing level but she is ok now. VLI cranes are on the way to clean the site.

No derail on the customer's siding?

No, the derail happened after the cars hit de Vale dash 9. It will be necessary to change de front bb truck. Another crane is coming to help this operation.

PHall was referring to the mechanical device that derails inadvertently moving cars on a siding before they get to the main line. The verb and noun are both "derail."

Maybe they should use them. Would have prevented this wreck.

I agree with you, but they say that it can cause more derailment if the yardmen forget to remove the derail device.

A low speed one car derailment is much better then a multi car runaway wreck.
But it's not my equipment that's being destroyed.

I agree and did a suggestion to friends at VLI to test derail devices here too.

Another method, used outside of North America, is known as Trap Points. This arrangement keeps the errant vehicle on the track, diverting it to a short spur: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Schutzweiche.jpg

A slow moving runaway vehicle comes to a rough stop against the bumper (buffer block). A big cut of cars may derail, but will still not be of the magnitude of a long, speed increasing runaway on the main track.

Intresting the narrow gauge track gets more use than the standard gauge looks like.
