New Yamanote Line Station Under Construction (Japan)
Author: cchan006

Tokyo's famous Yamanote Loop Line should have a new station added to the service in Spring of 2020.

As a tribute to the late KeyRouteKen, here's a link to his thread when he was invited as an ex-GI VIP to visit the old JNR Tamachi Yard, pretty much where the new station will be built:

There was a contest in June to determine the name of the new station (temporarily the New Shinagawa Station), located between Tamachi and Shinagawa on the Yamanote Line. Based on what I saw, the Keihin-Tohoku Line trains should make a stop here as well, but no other trains should make a stop at the former Tamachi Yard area.

It will be called the Takanawa-Gateway Station (高輪ゲートウェイ), where Takanawa is the historic name for the neighborhood. Takanawa was the most popular entry for the naming contest, and JR East decided to add "Gateway" in Katakana to the name, first for a Yamanote Line station. There are major redevelopments going on in the Shinagawa area, and the addition of the name "Gateway" is no doubt a nod to the "Global Gateway Shinagawa" theme of the redevelopment projects.

Yamanote Line's last new station is Nishi-Nippori (西日暮里) just north of Ueno. It opened in 1971.
