Hi, finally EMD of Brazil delivered the SD80ACe Demonstrator 8080 to MRS to start the tests where the SD70ACe's failed two years ago. The unit received big air intake pipes to improve the performance while running through big and tight tunnels.

Kinda defeats the purpose of having walkways on a unit, still do not see a fix for cooling issues.

More EMD junk just like all those SD70ACe's out there.

Check out Southern Pacific "tunnel motors." Lower air intake did help, and was done without intrusive ductwork.

The tunnel motors mod was dealing with radiator air. This mod is dealing with combustion air for the engine. Totally different!

It is said that these big ducts are for test only, If approved, EMD will work in a better intake air system for them.

Interesting! Thanks for posting - always neat to see what tweaks they make.

I think the SD80ACe's are the only 710-engined locomotives to have something more remiscent of that 645/16cyl rumble I grew up with. There's a great video of an EFC one starting an ore train and you can really hear the engine over the turbocharger.

Hard to tell  how it sounds  with the other two running.  Thanks for the video, Pedro.

I'm curious if they'll have issues with air filters plugging up faster as now they're more prone to suck up dust while moving.

MRS "Cabrito" tunnel is the biggest challenger in the Ferrovia do Aço (Steel railorad) line. It has only 8% of oxigen inside. In the past, it had wooden gates in the upper portal, but the GE's AC44' proved that they are obsolete for modern trains. But the EMD SD70ACe's didn't work well with ore train there, so that's why EMD is trying this special SD80 to test out there.

Is EMD LaGrange still doing locomotives for foreign properties??  What gauge is this engine?

These locomotives are made in Brazil nowadays. They are broad gauge, 1,600mm (5ft 3in)
