Birds often sit on the catenary in Baltimore's Penn Station.  They are fine unless they flap their wings and touch the steel beams holding up the canopy.

Thats what I was thinking,but wondered how he avoided completing the circuit while getting there(from an over pass/footbridge I assume )

There's also the question on what voltage is involved.
At 600 volts the "arc distance", is about 3 or 4 inches. Meaning you can be 6 inches away and not get fried.
Something like the 25,000 volts that is used on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor in the US the arc distance is about 30 inches.

Sydney trains run on 1500v dc.
Older system based off the English in the 1950's.

G'day  He didn't get fried as somebody saw what his intention was and was quick thinking getting in touch with the station staff and they got onto
elec trouble and had the circut cut asap. That is what I was told I am on the job.
