International Railroad Discussion > FCAB Trains with Old and New Power

Thursday, April 18 was my (and my group of friends') first day in Antofagasta. We literally rented two cars and drove out to the FCAB (well, we bought some hideously taste-free food at the airport to sustain us). We arrived at Prat and had an interesting English/Spanish conversation in which we learned that none of us knew enough Spanish. We continued east until on the outskirts of Baquedano we spotted headlghts. It was a train of copper cathodes and empty tanks lead by a pair of brand new GT42ACs (which we took to calling SD70s). Chased that train west to Latorre and then up to a hill above Gaviota. There we got an eastbound set of light engines, including two Newfies and a GR12, and a sulfuric acid and empty flats train with another pair of GT42ACs (SD70s?).

Image one is west of Baquedano as the two units pass under a carving in the hill behind.

Image two is of the train coming into Latorre, about to pass the vestiges of the station.

Image three is now on the hill above Gaviota. We were waiting on the GT42ACs, which we saw down in the valley, when we heard normaly asperated 567s behind us. Two NF201s brackets a GR12 in the old scheme.

Image four is of the light engines leaving with the first train visible is a tiny line down below.

Images five and six are of the second surprise, the empty flats and sulfuric acid heading east.

Great to see the new engines in service and thanks for posting! I’m sure the crews are way happier with them (especially having toilets)

I think you could call them SD69’s as they have the 12cyl 710 :)

Love the Newfies.  didnt know any of those got  sold for continued use.     Are the "SD70s" smaller carbodies for narrow gauge, or full size carbodies with narrow gauge trucks?    The GE BB40-CW's are so boring...just aniother GE widecab, with narrow gauge trucks....

It is so dry out there (how dry is it?), NASA tests rover models for Mars out there once in a while.

Narrow gauge, correct?. Great photos.

Meter gauge.

Is the carving in picture 1  similar to the ones in Nazca valley?
