International Railroad Discussion > Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile ShopsDate: 06/21/19 14:05 Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: erielackawanna The Ferrornor diesel shops in Baquedano are quite busy and there is a good deal of power waiting around the facilty. The most prominent of these are six ex Queensland GL26C-2s, only one of which is still on its own trucks, lined up like a World's Greatest Railfan display. Also there, although not shootable, were a pair of GL26C-2s in Ferronor paint, a GE70t in FCN paint (I think with six axle trucks), a smattering of U9Cs, a 47t (that I see was repainted since I was there in April), and some GR12Us.
Images one through three are of GE U9Cs 321, 322, and 320. Image eleven is of the interloper FCAB GR12 (well, it's on FCAB tracks). Date: 06/21/19 14:08 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: erielackawanna Date: 06/21/19 14:30 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: tomstp Their "filing system" for parts is something!

Interesting pics. Date: 06/22/19 04:00 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: CM80-46 If you have anymore pics you thought were not postable, please if you have the time, post them! I keep looking at all this interesting railroading! This International board has peaked my interest in railroads far away! There’s more than what’s in our backyards!

Stanley Jackowski Valrico, FL Date: 06/22/19 12:24 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: airbrakegeezer I suspect the reason for the ex-Queensland units being mostly up on blocks is that their trucks are being rebuilt with the required gauge change. Remember, QR uses 42" gauge and Ferronor/FCAB are meter (39-3/8") gauge. This is not a huge modification - only 1-5/16" on each side of an axle - but the easiest way to do it is to simply fit new wheel-and-axle sets, and this in turn requires removal of the traction motors, so they may as well be sent away for rebuild while they are out. Ferronor is not a large RR, so they probably do not have a "pool" of overhauled traction motors on hand for immediate replacement, so their "new" locos have to sit on blocks while they wait to get their trucks back. Yes, I know the brake hangers should be changed also, but the last time I was at Antofagasta (about 25 years ago <<sigh>>), FCAB were working on "Newfie" trucks, and they showed me that there were big enough spaces on the hangers and pins that it was an easy job to just shim them over into the correct position.
BTW, the comments on the dryness of the Atacama are "spot on". ISTR remember that NASA/JPL and/or Carnegie Mellon University, back in the '80s and '90s, did a lot of Lunar Rover testing in the Atacama, because it was the closest thing on Earth to the Moon's environment. I am really enjoying this series - I hope you can keep it up! Roger Lewis (airbrakegeezer) Date: 06/22/19 12:37 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: Ray_Murphy airbrakegeezer wrote:

Date: 06/22/19 13:15 Re: Ferronor Power at Baquedano Chile Shops Author: utwazoo Another reason for no rush in rebuilding the Queensland units is very slow development of new business, i.e. to/from Argentina. Of the 12 units purchased, only two are currently in regular service, and this on the Los Colorados iron ore line centered in Vallenar. Photos of the two taken last August. The trailing unit in the second photo is former Alaska GP49 2808 (now with C-C bogies and classed as SD49 by Ferronor)
