Shanghai - Chengdu trip report
Author: symph1

Last Sunday I rode from Shanghai to Chengdu, China on one of their newest trains, a Fu Xing (Renaissance) train. Top speed was 350 kph, though they are capable of 400. I was on train G1974 (G is their fastest class of trains), leaving Shanghai Hongqiao station at 7:17 and arriving Chengdu East, about 1400 miles away, on time at 18:27.

1. After putting my stuff in the train, I had plenty of time to take this pic.
2. View coming down the escalator.
3. This sign switches between English and Chinese. It tells about upcoming stops (there were 19), speed, temperature, etc.

7. Little snack given to all first class passengers: dried peas, two kinds of crackers,a few pieces of dried pork, and a bottle of water.
8. My train at the station stop in Xi'an. That's a 15 minute stop, so I could get off and shoot this.
9. Other trains in Shanghai.

Business Class is very comfy and quiet.  You also get Wi-Fi, which is nice.

The Chicoms have made a lot of progress since my first visit back in 1988.

Yes.

Chairman Deng Xiaoping recognized that China could either learn from the world, and become great, or it could continue to be a punching bag for Japan and the western powers.

Deng sent brigades of students to engineering, science, and finance schools all over the world.  They came back ready to build a new society on the wreckage of the cultural revolution.

Thanks for the report.

Pictures don't show very many passengers. What can you say about the load factors?

On the main corridors, the trains run on 12 to 15 minute headways and are normally full.

I was one of the first down to the train. I took pics right away, but most of the crowd hadn't boarded yet. It completely filled up. In my car, at any station where someone got off, someone else immediately boarded for that seat. Here are pics from another train, Beijing-Datong a couple years ago.
