EMD GT46C-ACE Gen II Downunder
Author: AussieGWAdriver

Hi all,

A few photos of Genesee & Wyoming Australia's 'new' GT46C-ACE Gen II locomotives called the GWB class. These were built by Progress Rail in the US in 2015 and shipped to Australia in 2018 and sold to GWA. They needed finishing off and painting. When delivered to Australia they were numbered EMD101-103. GWB102 was the first one completed at Progress Rail's Pt. Augusta Workshops and transferred to Adelaide a couple of weeks ago.

Cheers,
Justin

Juat a beautiful locomotive.Inside and out.
Being new (your title dates are not the
same as the builders date) they are
very clean.The workmanship is outstanding.

That is correct.

They are 'new' but around four years old. The builders plate says January 2019 but it was not delivered to GWA until late June.

Would a standard dimension SD70 be too large for routes on which these units operate?

They are different from the GT46ACe built by EMF of Brazil

Gen II version of the previously Australian built GT46C-ACe.

No USDM size locomotives do not fit anywhere in Australia except the isolated northwest WA Pilbara region.

Any ideas when the GWBs will enter service? And any comments on them vs the GWAs?

I/We so appreciate any/all your photos from Downunder!!  They are a nice break from GEVOs & our 70ACEs. They have a special meaning for me because I was in your Country in 1992/93 with the USA Super Sedan team in Speedway. We were based in Brisbane & raced from Adelaide to Cairns. I spent 5 months working on racecars & a month chasing trains with a mate from Melbourne. I was in the cab on most trips & brought back 1200 + prints of Narrow, Standard & Broad gauge stuff.  The last week that I was there we rode on mostly broad gauge around Melbourne & a funny story is I got back in the states & was riding in a ex SP GP9 (4ft8.5) talking about trains & something didn't look correct out the front window so I pipe up with I know whats wrong this is narrow gauge & I am use to Broad gauge (5.3) LOL.   In South Australia I watch them swap out 5.3ft trucks for 4.8ft ones in Adelaide, Rode a steel train from Port Augusta to Whyalla & back. In Queensland rode 3ft from Brisbane to Rockhampton on a EMU set & got to experience the difference between Wood, Steal & Concrete sleepers (Ties, Wood  = soft, Steal = firm,Concrete = hard) all at 130 Ks.
Thank you

The GWB's are still undergoing testing and accreditation. 102 has just returned to Progress Rail at Pt. Augusta for adjustments.

First impressions over the GWA looks like they will be more comfortable to drive and a lot of the electrical issues that caused previous failures have been rectified with the new equipement setup. There is a large amount of electrical differences and a few equipement layout changes over the GWA's.

A lot of the break of gauge stuff went in 1995 when the line from Adelaide to Melbourne was converted to standard gauge. The old bogie exchange at Dry Creek in Adelaide still stands with sheds of the complex being used for storage by GWA.

Different sleepers certainly give a different ride, even on the freight trains. I remember working a train from Broken Hill to Parkes in NSW where they used all three types of sleepers in the track together! it mage for an interesting ride.

Who was your friend from Melbourne?

Had to really work on what the fuinction of the big box in photo #8 was, it has the dark screen, a little key pad and a handle. It's even on the side of the cab I wasn't expecting.
Yep, Microwave oven. Nice... for now anyways.
t4p.

I remember the old bogie exchange in Albury on the Vic , NSW border. Some of the infrastructure remained until a few years ago ,when they reconfigured the Albury yard tracks to accomodate the Freeyway bi-pass.
Great photos Justin.

Interesting to see. Any idea why there was the delay from 2015-2019? Seems incredible to let a multimillion dollar engine sit for that long.
