International Railroad Discussion > VLI dual gauge train (Brazil)Date: 09/19/19 12:58 VLI dual gauge train (Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, my friend Rony sent me today these pics and videos of VLI dual gauge train at Salto SP . Note that the two AC44i are broad gauge and the rest of the train is narrow gauge. The car between the AC44 and the U20C do the transition from the two gauge couplers.

You do the talking and we do the watching! We compensate you! You have some really super railroading down there. Always look forward to your posts!

Great shots Date: 09/25/19 16:14 Re: VLI dual gauge train (Brazil) Author: beefnlee So forgive my ignorance. But what is there so much dual gauge in Brazil? wWhy not convert to one or the other only?
thank you Date: 09/26/19 12:35 Re: VLI dual gauge train (Brazil) Author: pedrop Well, our railroads started as isolated companies that were built to export commodities like coffee from the interland to the sea. Most were built in narrow gauge and just a few in broad gauge. Where they connected through the big cities, like Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, a third rail was laid to promote dual gauge in the same area. So, these locations still have mixed gauge. Since these railroads hadn't a plan to creat a rail network to serve the country, they never invest money to promote a standardization of the track gauge in Brazil. But, in the 1980's, a federal law stablished that all new railroad in construction must be built in broad gauge to link the actual broad gauge system. So, that's why the the FNS, FIOL, FICO and EFC were or are been built in broad gauge.
