International Railroad Discussion > Akasawa Forest Railway (Japan)

At one time there were 400 km of 762mm gauge logging railroads in the Kiso Valley located near Agematsu in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. On a fine fall day I got to ride the portion reconstructed in 1985.

1. Video at each end of the 2.2km round trip the locomotive is run around the train
2. A trail parallels the track into the Kiso-hinoki cypress forest. We made a round trip on the train and then walked the forest
3. Three Baldwin 0-4-2T locomotives survice to this day.  One is at the museum and two are preserved in California.

Thank you Ardenwood for the California museum pictures. The Asakawa operation is in a very obscure location off the beaten track and we were lucky to catch the last day this season in operation.

#7 is named as Digny and owned by Phil Goldman, Goleta, CA  > San Luis bispo Railroad Museum > Santa Rosa Valley Rail Road, Camarillo, CA
#6, which was #9 at Kiso, was owned by Henry Sorenson of McKinleyville, CA and donated to California State Railroad Museum.  Mr. Soreson told me with a mischievous smile #9 plate was gone, but #6 plate came on sale and he changed from #9 to #6.  The head light and guage (30inch > 36inch) are also changed.
