A day at Vale VDD yard with an american railfan (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

On November 5, 2016 I took ride on Vale passenger train with some friends and an american railfan to visit Vale VDD yard to watch some ore trains. It is a nice location in my opinion. VDD is the CCO code for Desembargador Drumond in Vale mainline (EFVM) narrow gauge system. At VDD starts the tracks to Itabira, the oldest ore mines of Vale (former CVRD). In the past, the tracks to Itabira were mainline, but in the end of 1980´s Vale got the rights to reach Belo Horizonte and the old RFSSA tracks to BH became mainline and Itabira was changed to a branch. VDD concentrates all ore trains coming from Itabira and also from Fabrica branch, plus all trains of VLi from BH to Vitoria ports.

Here are some pics of our trip that day.

See our visit to MRS Andaime yard ( P1-03) here

1) The group of railfans at the station, while the passenger train follow the tracks to Vitoria.

2 and 3) As soon as the passenger train cleared the section, the first train came to us. It was a nice fuel train with Vale and VLi tank cars

7) A few minutes after the fuel train, a mixed of coal and empties comes by track 4 too.

8) The train follows the sinuous tracks alongPiracibaca river

9) The nice consist of coal gondolas. This coal comes from overseas, maybe from US. Some of the cargo ships that carry the ore, comes back with coal.

26 to 28) Again, the DPU separates different cargos. The different colors of the ore mean they are from different mines.

Great photo series. Four-track narrow gauge main line looks very impressive. About how many trains per day on this line?

Hi, Vale run 50 to 60 trains a day there and these number can reach 80 to 85 during the grain season when many VLI grains take this route to Vitoria ports.
