Big tires coming to my area (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, MRS is coming from Rio de Janeiro  to my area with a special cargo of big tires for mining trucks,  maybe to Vale mining. Some folks recorded a video of the train at Juiz de Fora, MG. I hope it can arrive here in town on Saturday morning.

'Looks like "O"-gauge tires on an "N" -gauge model railroad!  Those things are huge.

I know that Michelin has a few tire manufacturing locations in South Carolina.  One makes "Earthmover Tires" that can be 13 feet tall.  Many move to the port of Charleston SC for export and in these open top containers as shown.  Some are shipped on low frame trailers so as to clear bridges and other low clearance areas.

I am staying in Charleston, South Carolina right now and have seen several of these containers being trucked to the ports.  I have not seen any of these shipments handled by rail to the ports, so I believe they must be highway only from a relatively nearby plant.

There are/were tire plants in the midwest that made big tires like that for the mining industry.
It would make sense for them to ship by rail. But anything under about 500 miles will probably go by road.
