Ferronor Chile EMDs
Author: masterphots

In June 2013 Ferronor took delivery of six EMD (Indiana) GT46ACs.  In addition,  an EMD GT46AC demostrator came with them before going on to Brazil.  The loco,  No. 4301 never left Chile as Ferronor bought it.  It's still in demo paint.  These units replaced very used up EMD GR12s dating back to the government railway, as well as those from a closed private iron mine operation.  All are in iron ore hauling on the meter gauge line from the Los Colorados iron mine to the port at Huasco for export.  Here are a few photos

2.  4301E leaving Vallenar   May 2014

3.  4301E leaving Vallenar  August 2018

4.  Former Alaska GP49 2805 + slug westbound with loads east of Vallenar and the mine.  May 2014.   This is one of two former Alaska GP49s on Ferronor.  Sister company Transap has another two on their wide gauge operation in the south.   The slugs are no longer in service.

That is sure interesting to see former Alaska Railroad GP49 2805 there in that setting (including it's winterization hatch still in place over the radiator of the unit) given the much different environment it was originally purchased for in Alaska.

Thank you for sharing these photos.

Great series. Unit 4301 was tested in Brazil too.

Since there are no vertical clearance issues on the line,  they left all the stuff on top as is.   The two wide gauge GP49s in the south had it removed due to clearance issues with catenary, bridges and tunnels.
