International Railroad Discussion > Horse-drawn railway at Cuzamá Yucatán, MX in 2018

As part of a week-long visit to the Mérida area in Yucatán, Mexico in June of 2018 with my wife and her sister's family, we went on a day excursion to visit the cenotes (flooded caverns) of Cuzamá.  I was surprised to see we would take a horse-drawn rail carriage ride from the visitor center to the first cenote, a distance of about 1/3 to 1/2 mile.  They seemed to send two trains at a time from one end to the other before changing directions to return to the starting point.  Here are some pics and a short video looking out the back of our train at the other one following us.  They had several horses and changed them frequently with regular watering.

3&4) A look at one of the carsets at the end of the line plus the video.  The parallel line didn’t seem to be used at the time.  The track appeared to be movable from one location to another as needed.

I'll tell you what Chad. I suggest you forgo a visit to the Isle of Man to visit their narrow gauge steam, 1880s electric railway with toastracks and Fell Rail equipped mountain railway. That way you'll not see the horse trams on the promenade at Douglas (the island capital).

I hope you're joking.

At one time there were over 2,000 miles of these animal-powered lines in the Yucatan.  If you want to know more and see lots of photos, put the five words "very narrow gauge Yucatan Cerny" in your search engine and the article will come up.

Wow, that's an interesting page you have.  I had no idea there was such a network of these lines around Merida.  In the last paragraph you mention a restored line from Chunkanan and Acanceh, the latter of which is where my wife's mother is from.
