International Railroad Discussion > TLSA: a new railroad in Brazil

Hi, at this moment we have some new railroads under construction in Brazil. The TLSA (Transnordestina Logística SA) is one of them. It is located in the Southeast linking Ceara, Pernambuco and Piaui states.
The starting fleet during the construction is made of SD40-2, some ex MRS and BNSF units.

Thanks Pedro, I see some of the new line is mixed gage. Is the wider gage standard or 5 foot?

Pedro, is this line going to remain isolated, or will it connect to the other networks?

The line is already linked to narrow gauge FTL (Ferrovia Transnordestina) and also will be linked to EFC (Carajas rwy) and FNS (VLI and Rumo North & South rwy). That's why
we see dual gauge in some pictures. About 527 km of the line will be dual gauge.
In this map,  the  red lines show the new railroads planned and
offered in auctions soon.

The map of FTL railroad. This company is managed by CSN, the biggest steel mill plant in Brazil.
FTL has a very interesting fleet of narrow gauge old GM G12, G8, tiny GEs and Alcos. It also has SD38 and SD18 in its broad gauge sytem connected to Carajás  rwy (EFC) at São Luís  MA port.

Enjoy all your posts. I have always wondered how
standard gauge US locomotives are regained to 
the 5 ft. Gauge? The trucks are basically cast as
one piece to accommodate the 4 ft. 8 1/2" inch standard gauge.
How is it possible to widen these without
entirely new castings?

Hi, they cut the truck between the plate and the outside frames, add two pieces of steel to complete measurement necessary to reach the broad gauge and then weld the parts again .
A friend will provide pictures of this process to us.

technology and expertise of today's welding processes on 
reuniting heavy castings such as truck frames.

It is old British gauge 5' 3" (1,600 mm).
