My understanding is that SA locomotives were often named after the driver's wives or girl friends.

You are correct, locomives were named after wives ect, one had to remember that during our visit, a large number of locomotives in depots were one crew locomotives, and not pool machines, alas on my 1978 visit all this had changed, and you could see the changes.the South African Engineman had extream pride in the locomotives.
this i found out first hand when i cab rode, South of DeAar on an imaculate "23" class 4.8.2 when the driver told me. He was on holiday when his locomotive was rolled in an accident, and he was that upset, as he said "i loved this machine more than my wife"
