That is plain stupid.There is nothing to keep the
operator not able to see the train.But he keeps
going anyhow.

You did read the story in the link, right? The Driver did brake the train...

2 ft. when I was in Cairns a few years ago. Unforntunately, it wasn't the right season so I didn't see any trains. It was still fun following the tracks, which seemed to go all over the place.
