Train collision in Nacala, Mozambique
Author: pedrop

Train collision paralyzes Nacala Corridor The accident happened around 4:30 am today when two freight trains collided in the Meconta district area, about 80 km from the city of Nampula. There is still no official information, but popular reports are the account of some injured drivers, who are said to have been rescued by an ambulance from a nearby hospital. Still according to the popular ones, the trains went in the same direction (Nacala-city of Nampula), but in a considerable technical separation between them. The freight carrier carried containers with different cargo and some wagons containing agricultural fertilizers. However, part of the composition of the first train will have disconnected from the rest and remained on the railroad, probably without the driver being aware of it. This part of the composition ended up becoming an obstacle that was not seen at a distance by the driver of the second train, causing the accident. The Nacala Corridor is licensed to Nacala Logistics and comprises a 912 km line from the coal mines in Tete to Nacala-à-Velha, where the coal outlet is located. It is not known how long it will take to restore circulation to the line.

Vale purchased 80 Cape gauge BB40-9WM in 2014/15 for use by CLN over the Nacala Corridor.

Lead units had their cabs armoured by a South African contractor in 2017/18

Vale also have 16 leased C30AC1, plus a number of GT22CU-2 allocated to the Corridor
