Hi, following the train O381 presented in another thread, I recorded a video of it leaving the yard and I was amazed by the nice sound it produced while  crossing theswitching key to enter mainline again.

Pedro, the manner of numbering both cars and locomotives is different than N. American roads. One more digit that one would expect. What is the last digit? Thanks!

Jack, in Brazil the railroad numbering is controled by a goverment section called ANTT. In 1957 the governnent  took over almost all railroads here, so they standardized the numbering of all the equipment in all the gauges. To avoid the same numbering of cars or locomotives in two or more railroads, a verification number was  added in the end, followed by a letter. This number and letter says the owner of the equipment and the gauge of it. They never will be the same. For exemple,  we can have two lcomotives in narrow gauge as 3290, but in the system they will have different verification digits, like 3390-7 or 3390-0. The freight cars also follow the same rules. VLI gondola GFE 615345-2E can differs from Vale GFE 615354-1V, for exemple. The letters say the type of the car:
G F- gondola drop botton
E - maximun weight (100 tons).

Indeed, more complex than one might initially expect. But makes sense in a country with [at one time] a system-wide nationalization.

Here is MRS 3951-1. MRS is the only company that shows the verification digit in the locomotives. All other preffer to show the main number only.
