In addition to the Skyliners there were other steam types to be seen.  Most operations were centered in the western part of the country only a few hours drive from Istanbul.  There was a pocket of steam operating in the far eastern part of the country,  close to the border with the Soviet Union.  Today it's Armenia and Azerbaijan.   But back then in the middle of winter it just wasn't worth the time to drive all the way over there for a few more 2-10-0s.  And who knew what the roads or hotels might offer.  So,  back to Karabuk to begin this series of photos.

1-2.   We were suprised to find a couple of former US Army S160 2-8-0s still working.  Here are 45203 and 45207 shunting at Karabuk.  1`2/19/84

3.     Next to come by was MacArthur 2-8-2 46206.  We almost missed this one as we were watching a Skyliner and this engine came by in near silence.  It was the only 2-8-2 we saw on the trip.

7.   2-10-2 57020 at Sutlac. 12/27/84   Interesting two spout water plug

8.   0-8-0 44015 at Manisa at dawn  12/28/84

9.  2-10-0s 56513/56522 on the Afyon to Konya mixed train.  At Inay on 12/29/84   The engines are German Kreigsloks (War locomotives) that were spread around Europe after WW2.

11.  I'll close with another surprise encounter.  A former LMS/BR class 8F 2-8-0 45168 at Kutaya.    12/31/84    An 8F was repatriated to England decades ago and is preserved.

Great group of posts from Turkey.  Had no idea that much steam could be found there in the mid-80s.
