Torpedo car ( Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, I found this torpedo car at the gate of Delp Co. here in town.  It came to be repaired and now is going back to Açominas Steel plant, that belongs to Gerdau nowadays.

That torpedo car is certainly an impressive mass of metal.  Look how much more weight is on the tires as compared to the other load.

Very interesting post, Pedro.  Thanks!

Hi Pedro! Pat here! I was wondering. What was the use of the Torpedo car? Was it used for actual Navy torpedos or ???..

Hi, the torpedo cars are used to carry melted iron inside the steel plants. They are very heavy. This one here can carry 350 tons of melted iron. They use to run very short distantes inside the plants and they do not have brake system. They are rare to be seen outside the plants where they work.

Around Chicago, the term for them is bottle cars.
