Empty ore M649 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, I saw this empty ore M649 today morning here in town. It is going to Bahia state to get ore from BAMIN - Bahia Mining Co. The train will be divided in two section of forty one cars and leaded by two U20C from EWL to DLL yards, a journey of more than one thousand Km. When loaded, each train will have two U20C leading and other two as DPU.

Interesting! Do they switch to the U20C because of a tighter loading gauge or lighter track instead of using the BB40-9?

The tracks beyond EPM yard is good untill the EMD plant. From that  point ahead  only small engines are accept due to light bridges, narrow cuts, light rails and poor tracks with old ties and thin ballast layers. VLI is working to open more 250 km of tracks to the Dash 9's, but it will need to change more than forty bridges. So, they are changing rails, ties and ballast first to increase the speed of the trains in those tracks. Then they will change the bridges and open new small section of tracks where the current ones are too narrow for big locomotives.
