Millipede swarms in Japan
Author: Ray_Murphy

In North America we have 13-year and 17-year periodical cicadas which emerge in huge swarms (but to my knowledge have never affected rail traffic). In mountainous parts of Japan, there are periodical millipede emergences that are so dense they have been known to stop rail traffic:

A millipede's steam locomotive Whyte notation leg arrangement would be something like 0-2-2-2-2-2-2-2.........2-0 depending on the millipede species' leg count.

Someone has made a comment to the NYT article saying that the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroasd railroad in Colorado has had problems with squished cicadas from time to time.

Never heard of the C&TS have cicada problems, but I have heard of them having problems with tent caterpillers by the thousands greasing up the climb from Chama through the forest.

0-2-2-2-4-4-4-4-4-4-4...4-0 actually.  Two leg pairs per body segment, except for the 2nd-4th segments.
