Empty rail train V092 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, last week I found VLI empty rail train passing by town on way to its base at EWL yard to get more welded rails bars. It was leaded by an BB40-3, one of the last still running. VLI is retiring them and some start to be scrapped. These in 81 series belongs to Progress Rail.
Enjoy.

NICE video coverage of the rail train. Locomotive looks pretty good for being close to being scrapped.

Yes, they are in shape but VLI is retiring all the old "fuel drunkers". They intend to use only more modern locomotives in the consist of the trains.

If they are getting rid of them because of fuel usage then they must be going to get GE engines that are more fuel efficient. Right?

Nowadays, VLI is buying much more EMD SD70ACe-BB than GE BB40-9WM or ES43BBi.

Hi Dave, Rumo has about 40 BBi's, including the Klabin ones. VLI has 11 units. Klabin placed a new order for two units in this semester.
