Collision of the Vale helper locomotives (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today a couple of Vale locomotive helpers collided into the end of a ore train in the Carajas railroad (EFC). These helpers use a computer program to coupling and uncoupling "on the fly". We do dot have information about what happened. Watching the video, we perceive the ore train stopped and the helpers had no time to stop.
1 - 3) The ore cars that received the  impact.

Serious video. Surprised they have unmanned helpers with that task, but I guess it was working at some point.

The helpers have an engineer in the cab, but the procedures of approximation, coupling and uncoupling is controlled by the computer when it gives the distance and speed necessary for a safety coupling. We do not understand what really happened that cause the helpers approaching too fast. A failure in the laser system could be a reason. The investigations will say. Maybe the train ahead reduced the speed too fast and the computer delay to recalculate the speed.

There was a enginner in the cab. See the video and new answers above

Wow, that's amazing. So if there was an engineer in the helper he must have felt pretty helpless at the point where he realized the locomotives weren't slowing down. I spent a rainy week at that Vale mine near Carajas in 2003 observing operations while I was a vice president of the explosives company that they used. The mine and the railraod are amazing engineering accomplishments.

And congratulations on Video of The Day -- twice in a row!
Thanks so much for sharing, Pedro!
